Problem:

When I select the InRoads icon to load the product, MicroStation loads as expected but the InRoads program never opens.  The splashscreen doesn't appear, and the InRoads explorer is never opened.

Solution:

This can happen when certain products (i.e. CloudWorx, iPlot, etc.) are installed on the machine, which somehow prevents other applications from loading through the MDL Applications.  We can define a variable value for the MS_DGNAPPS to force MicroStation to keep loading apps and not stop before it can load the InRoads app. To edit this variable, you will need access to edit the MS_DGNAPPS variable:

Go in MicroStation to Workspace > Configuration and edit the MS_DGNAPPS config. Set the mode to prepend, and add the following variable:

$(BSI_CIVIL_APP)

Save the Configuration, close MicroStation and reload InRoads to see if it will load after MicroStation is loaded. It should automatically bring up that InRoads splashscreen and then load the application.

Improve Surface Processing Speed

Product(s):InRoads

Area: Surface

Question:

I have a very large surface that processes very slowly.  Is there anything I can do to improve processing speed?

Answer:

The following solutions may improve processing speeds in InRoads/MicroStation:

  • If the mapping for the project is very dense you might have some latitude to thin the model.  If using InRoads 8.7+, there is an Application Add-In called Thin Random Points. It will appear under Surface > Utilities. This command is much faster than the normal thinning routine and it was developed for Lidar data. The Help has an explanation of the methodology used.

  • Go to Surface > Surface Properties and see how many deleted points are in the model.  You may need to run the Surface > Utilities > Compress Surface command to remove these deleted feature points to reduce the size of the DTM.

  • Copy portions of the large surface into separate DTM surfaces using the Copy Portion of Surface command.  This will allow you to work in a designated area for a project that may be confined to a small area within a larger surveyed / laser scanned surface, greatly reducing the amount of information that is required to be opened in InRoads to perform your design tasks.

  • Another possibility is to increase the virtual memory on the machine.  Use your Task Manager and set the column view to include/show the Virtual Memory Size.  If the physical memory used exceeds the virtual memory size, there are processes in Windows which can be performed to increase the virtual memory.  The following workflow is provide by MicroSoft:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-virtual-memory-size#1TC=windows-7

  • Please review the following wiki for additional suggestions on improving processing speeds: http://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/2360.microstation-memory-management

Error Opening Tin File in ProjectWise CONNECT edition

Revision 1 posted to GEOPAK | InRoads | MX | OpenRoads Wiki by Kevin McDonald on 2/17/2017 6:57:19 PM

Product(s):GEOPAK

Area: ProjectWise

Question:

After upgrading to ProjectWise CONNECT edition, user opens GEOPAK SS2 and gets the following error when trying to load a TIN file: “Error Opening Tin File pw:\....”

Answer:

Since GEOPAK SS2 was released years before ProjectWise CONNECT, it did not know the proper registry keys to look for to resolve ProjectWise CONNECT file locations.

Therefore, after a user upgrades to ProjectWise CONNECT, it is necessary to re-direct the old registry keys to the new CONNECT registry locations. A program can be downloaded from the following location that will update the registry keys to point to the correct location.

http://communities.bentley.com/products/road___site_design/m/road_and_site_design_gallery/272500/download

To run:

1.) Download and extract the file “reglnk.exe” from the link above
2.) Right-click on the exe and select “Run as administrator” on any machine that is showing the problem.

Problem:

When opening InRoads and loading the preferences *.XIN file, the list which should contain the names of saved preferences for InRoads commands is completely blank.  After checking the Style manager, Template Manager, and XML Reports, they are also all blank and no information is populating.

Solution:

There are certain files required on the machine to read XML files correctly.  InRoads requires Internet Explorer 6.0+ as well as a specific pair of MSXML DLL files.  Without these DLL files, the program will not be able to read and format the XML information correctly from the file.  These MSXML files are located at C:\\Windows\system32 and are titled MSXML4.DLL and MSXML6.DLL.  If one or both of these files do not exist, the results could be blank commands due to the program not formatting the information from the XIN, XML, or ITL files.  If you are experiencing this type of behavior, it may be required to delete the DLL files and download them from the Microsoft website.  They could be deleted or changed with a system update or a Windows update and be required to download these necessary files. Here is a link to the downloads for these particular MSXML files on the Microsoft downloads page.

Version(s):10.00.01.39, 10.04.00.46
Area: Publish imodel
Original Author:Holly Herring, Bentley Technical Support Group

Question:

When I publish an i-model from MicroStation CONNECT v10.04.00.46, and then open the i-model in OpenRoads Navigator CONNECT, I get one of the following error messages:

“Unable to open file”

“The i-model you are trying to open is not supported by this version of Navigator. Use MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 3 or a newer version of your publishing application to republish the i-model.”

Why is this, and how do I fix it?

Answer:

MicroStation CONNECT comes with a newer DgnDb i-model Importer, v01.05.08xxx.x, that creates a 0601 i-model. OpenRoads Navigator will only read 0505 i-models that are created from a previous DgnDb i-model Importer v01.05.07.xxx.x.

To be able to open an i-model in OpenRoads Navigator CONNECT v10.00.01.39:

  1. Uninstall the Bentley DgnDb i-model Importer 1.5 x64 (it is version 01.05.08xxx.x)
  2. Download the previous version, ItgDgnDbImporter1-5-7-9_x64.zip, here:
  3. Install the previous version by launching, ItgDgnDbImporter_x64.msi.
  4. Create another i-model within MicroStation CONNECT.
  5. Open the i-model in OpenRoads Navigator CONNECT.

Answer: When keying on the "o" be sure your cursor is in a field of the Civil Accudraw heads-up prompt. Also, depending on what you’re doing, the focus may be in the "geometry" prompt vs. the Civil AccuDraw prompt. You can TAB to move between fields before keying in "o".

January 2017 - Working Effectively in the Modeling Environment

Question: When should I use a 2D or a 3D DGN?
Answer: Use a 2D DGN for geometry and corridors, use a 3D DGN for survey, topography, and terrains.

Question: What are some best practices for file organization within OpenRoads?
Answer: https://communities.bentley.com/products/road___site_design/w/road_and_site_design__wiki/28222.video-best-practices-for-project-file-organization-in-openroads

Question: When is the Default-3D model created in a 2D DGN?
Answer: The 3D model is created upon invoking an element or function that requires elevation. For example, when you activate a terrain or a profile. You cannot delete the Default-3D model once it is created.

Question: How should I reference my 2D and 3D DGNs?
Answer: For OpenRoads models, attach the 2D default model to the 2D model, and let OpenRoads manage the 3D model. When referencing 3D models from other sources, attach them to the OpenRoads 3D model.

Question: What happens if you start a project in a 3D seed file and create an alignment?
Answer: If you place geometry in a 3D DGN, the 2D and 3D instances are in the same model. It makes picking difficult, but it will work. Best practice is to create the civil model from a 2D seed file.

Question: Can a corridor design be done in a blank DGN with the 2D alignment DGN referenced?
Answer: Yes, the geometry can be in a referenced model.

Question: Can you reference the profiles into sheets afterwards?
Answer: Profiles referenced into sheets will be in OpenRoads Designer

Question: Does referencing work with ProjectWise?
Answer: Yes

Question: How do you target non-civil objects for end conditions?
Answer: You can target MicroStation meshes by featurizing. MicroStation lines/chains can be targeted directly, but it is recommended to featurize them. It also is beneficial because a name of the element exists and is easier to track.

December 2016 - Where in the World? Geospatially Locating Your Project

Question: What is the difference between the two Attachment Methods, Geographic – Reprojected and Coincident World?
Answer: Geographic – Reprojected, takes account of rotation and scaling between the two coordinate systems by recalculating the points in the reference model to align with corresponding latitude/longitude points in the active model. Coincident World simply lines up the 0,0 (Global Origin) and design plane.

Question: What is a sister file?
Answer: A sister file is usually a text file listing coordinates of at least two corners of a raster image that are used to scale the image. A sister file is needed if the raster image does not include location data within the file.

Question: Can I create/define a local coordinate system that will interact with other coordinate systems?
Answer: Yes, the functionality to setup coordinate systems is included in the Bentley Map software.

Question: Where can I access more training on geo-coordination?

Question:

How do you rename horizontal alignment point names?

Answer:

  1. Go to Geometry>Horizontal Curve Set>Events (in some cases, you may want to consider assigning point names at Geometry>Utilities>Assign Names before creating event points).
  2. Toggle on "Alignment Point to Cogo".  You do not need to specify a seed name.  Click Apply. This will add your alignment points to your cogo buffer.
  3. Now go to Geometry>Cogo Points>Rename.  From here you will be able to select your horizontal alignment point name and rename it to whatever you desire.
  4. When you review your horizontal alignment, you will see that the point names in parenthesis have updated to the new names you provided.

Revision 16 posted to GEOPAK | InRoads | MX | OpenRoads Wiki by Sanders Thomas on 3/21/2017 5:54:19 PM

Product(s):InRoads
Version(s):08.11.07+, 08.11.09+
Area: Survey
Original Author:Bentley Technical Support Group

Question:

When opening a design file in Microstation alone, temporary survey graphics that have been previously displayed remain in the file.

or

When opening a design file with InRoads and MicroStation, graphics are visible until a MicroStation command is run, then the graphics disappear.

Answer:

When displaying temporary survey graphics in a design file using the command Survey > View Survey Data, it is important to recognize that these graphics are actually written to the design file as graphic elements.  What makes these graphics “temporary” is that they are marked with an XAttribute which only makes them visible when the fwd containing the data is loaded in InRoads.

To resolve this issue, Bentley has developed a utility that will delete temporary graphics from MicroStation design files.  With this utility, the user has the option to completely delete the survey graphics or strip the graphics of their element attributes.

The Delete Survey Graphics Utility can be downloaded HERE.

Once installed, the utility can be accessed from the Windows Start Menu - Start > All Programs > Bentley > Delete Survey Graphics.

At Directory (within the Delete Survey Graphics dialog box) navigate to the folder that contains the design files with survey graphics to be deleted or stripped and Apply.  All file in the folder selected will be processed.

This wiki explains "Add Station Equation" tool.

The "Add Station Equation" tool is used to define a station equation at a designated location on the alignment. Multiple station equations can be added to an element, but that should be added in order from the beginning to end of element.

Steps to add station equation :

1. From the Task Manager, select "Horizontal Geometry > Add Station Equation".

2. Follow the heads-up prompts. Locate the alignment.

3. Locate the "Back Station", and give the required value for back station.

4. Locate the "Ahead Station", you must specify a name say, a13+00

The Station Equations can be removed through Project Explorer.

Question:

How can I extract a construction limit or a footprint of my road design from my corridors?

Answer:

  1. Set the design stage to one that creates the corridor top mesh.
  2. Within the Default 3D model, create a selection set of the corridors you want to include as the construction limit.
  3. Go to Tools > Mesh > Mesh Utilities > Extract Boundary

  1. Data point to accept to extract boundary from mesh elements.
  2. If you selected multiple corridors, you may need to trim the overlapping boundary lines. You can use the Trim Multiple MicroStation tool found from going to Tools > Manipulate > Modify > Trim Multiple.

Roadway Designer Template Transition

This workflow will walk through a generic template transition.  Keep in mind that two templates must be dropped in the same corridor to run this workflow.

The first step is to complete the connection between the points from template one to template two.  (This will show the Roadway Designer how to connect the points from one template to the next.  If the two templates have the same point names in both templates, this portion will be completed automatically and show a dark blue rectangle.)  This can be done by double clicking on the rectangular shape in the Roadway Designer’s Plan View or right clicking on the shape and selecting “Edit”.

Figure 1.  Plan View – Before transition

Once the Edit Transition dialog populates, the connection will need to be completed for all the points.  These points that require user adjustments will be displayed with a bold plus sign.  (If this process is not completed, there is a high possibility that some of the points/components will not be created within the surface.)

Figure 2.  Edit Transition – Before edits

If it is hard to view the two templates, the view can be moved by right clicking on a point and selecting “Move Template”.

Figure 3.  Edit Transition –  “Move Template”
After all the points have been connected from one template to the next, select “OK”.  (There should be no remaining bold plus signs displaying)

Figure 4.  Edit Transition – After edits
3.  At this time, the Edit Transition Midpoint dialog should appear.

Figure 5.  Edit Transition Midpoint – Before edits

In this dialog, some of the point constraints must be “released” from the template points so the template can transition properly.  This can be accomplished by right clicking on the point that will be moving/transitioning and selecting the constraint that needs to be released.

Figure 6.  Edit Transition Midpoint – release/delete constraints

There is a scrollbar at the bottom of the dialog that will show how the template will transition from one template to the next over the station range specified.  When the correct constraints have been released, the transition can take place.  Check the transition with the scrollbar to verify that the transition looks/appears correctly.

Figure 7.  Edit Transition Midpoint – Use of Scrollbar

Once the template appears to transition correctly in the Edit Transition Midpoint dialog, select "OK".  At this time, the transition has been addressed correctly/completely and it will be applied to the Roadway Designer.

Figure 8.  Plan View – After transition is complete

The transition is shown to be "addressed" with a dark blue rectangle in the plan view of the Roadway Designer.
