Original Author:Bentley Technical Support Group

Description:

When working with corridors in OpenRoads, there are many options and settings that can help optimize the processing speed of the corridor and prevent memory allocation issues/crashes.  Here are some helpful tips:

Turn on/off settings depending on design stage

During the Design Stage of the project, to optimize speed and performance, the follow settings are recommended. Note that the following controls should be set to False:

  • External Control Points

  • Densify Vertical Curves

  • Create Top Mesh

  • Create Bottom Mesh

  • Include Null Point Linear Features

The managed workspace has been updated to reflect these changes.

In the Final Design Stage, you should set External Control Points and Densify Vertical Curves to “True”. The meshes and null point should remain “False”. The managed workspace has been updated to reflect these changes.

Set Template Drops to 10 MU (Master Units)

Careful consideration should be given when determining the drop interval used for a corridor. Generally, this value is equal to or less than (but still a multiple) of the desired interval for the final cross sections. Keep in mind that smaller drop intervals will result in longer processing times. Also, it is not necessary to set the interval so small that it encompasses all desired cross section stations. Critical template drops will be added when the corridor processes (cardinal points, external control points, horizontal and vertical curve densification).

Based on this, it is recommended that a template drop interval is no less than 5 MU and no greater than 10 MU, with 10 being the preferred value.

Additionally, if you are working on a small station range (i.e., an intersection), you could consider temporarily changing the template drops in other station ranges to a very large number (i.e., 1000). This would essentially disable corridor processing outside of your current area of concentration.

Avoid Point controls that use “Profile from surface” reference elements

If the reference elements for point controls are elements that have been draped to the surface, those reference elements will contain a very large number of vertical PIs. Trying to process all these vertical PIs with external controls set to “True” in the Design Stage Settings will negatively impact processing times.

Consider instead letting the template do the work of matching the existing ground elevations. Using a Project to Surface constraint on the template point will eliminate the need for a vertical point control, and may eliminate the need for a point control altogether.

Deactivate corridor Processing to increase performance

There will be many times during design when it is not desirable to have the corridor reprocess every time an edit is made. For example, if creating numerous point controls, it is more efficient to have the corridor reprocess after adding all points controls as opposed to reprocessing after adding each individual point control. To achieve this, locate the corridor in Project Explorer > Civil Model. Right-click on the corridor name and select Lock – Deactivate Rule to lock the corridor.

You can now make edits to the corridor without the corridor processing after every change. Once finished editing, simply follow the process above to unlock the corridor.

The corridor will not automatically reprocess at this stage. Use the Process Corridor tool to reprocess the corridor and apply the edits.

Use an active terrain model only as large as necessary

For optimal performance, it is recommended that the active terrain model be only as large as is necessary for the project. If you have a 10 mile long existing topo terrain model, but your project is only 2 miles, use the Create Clipped Terrain Model tool to remove portions of the terrain model that are not necessary for the project.

Additionally, consider using Clear Active Terrain Model to disable end condition processing. If you are working on an area of the project that does not involve end conditions, this will help to speed up processing times.

Other Considerations:  Detach raster images while running civil design processes

When working with designing you civil model, raster images are not necessary and they utilize a lot of memory. Detach any raster images to make sure to free as much space as possible and attach only when civil design is complete.

Due to the enhanced functionality of Bentley OpenRoads, when working with large and/or complex data, users may experience performance issues when processing corridor data. To address this, OpenRoads has several built-in tools and settings which will optimize corridor processing. We have also gathered suggestions from a variety of engineers, designers, and developers which have been proven to increase processing speeds.

The PowerPoint presentation, video, and supplemental files contained in this wiki will provide information on various techniques that will greatly enhance the speed at which a corridor is processed.

Click the video below to play it. To view in fullscreen mode, first click the YouTube link at the bottom of the video to launch the video on the YouTube site. Then, click the fullscreen button (rightmost button at bottom of video).

Import Point Cloud Data into MicroStation

Import the file using the Tools > Point Cloud > Point Cloud > Attach to bring in the information and convert it to a POD file.

From here, use the File > Attach method to receive the Open dialog.  Search for the file that is to be imported.  File types that can be imported are the following:

Pointools POD (*.POD)
Terrascan BIN (*.BIN)
Topcon CL3 (*.CL3)
Faro FLS (*.FLS)
Faro FWS (*.FWS)
LAS (*.LAS)
Leica PTG (*.PTG)
Leica PTS (*.PTS)
Leica PTX (*.PTX)
Riegl 3DD (*.3DD)
Riegl RDB (*.RDB)
Riegl RXP (*.RXP)
Riegl RSP (*.RSP)
Generic Text (*.XYZ)
Generic Text (*.TXT)
All Files (*.*)

Converting file to *.POD

After selecting the file to import, a dialog will appear that asks if the file is to be converted. This is where the file can be converted to a *.POD file and options can be specified for converting the data.  If this is something to be worked on over time, it is required to convert the file to a *.POD format for later usage.  In this example, I am importing an LAS file to create the POD.

View Attributes

One important thing to check when you import the file and it converts to the POD format is the View Attributes.  Open the Settings > View Attributes and at the very bottom there is an option for the Point Cloud Presentation.  Make sure this Style is set to ‘Classification’.

If you want to only import the 'Ground' shots from the Point Clouds, this is the setting used. Under the Point Cloud > Presentations, make sure only the Ground option is on so it will display nothing but the ground classification shots.

Import Point Cloud into OpenRoads Terrain

When there is a fence defined, the Terrain tools will automatically honor that fence during the import process.  To work with manageable surfaces in InRoads/GEOPAK/MX, fences will be required to generate the surfaces.

Select the 'Create from Point Cloud' command under the Terrain Model tasks.

After selecting the option “Create from Point Cloud”, a Point Clouds Surface dialog should appear to select filters and tolerances. The filter button will display the results prior to selecting “Accept”.Once the filters have been approved, select “Accept”.

Export Surface

The Terrain Model tools will allow you to export surfaces in four different formats by selecting the 'Export to File' option under the Terrain Model tasks:  MX (.fil),InRoads DTM (.dtm), GEOPAK TIN (.tin), and LandXML (.xml).

Original Author:Bentley Technical Support Group

Question:

How can you display the Latitude and Longitude at specific control points?  The information is available in a surface DTM as well as through the Survey Field Book FWD, so what is the best way for InRoads to label the Lat/Long for points?

Answer:

This can be accomplished through the Tracking command in InRoads.  Tools > Tracking > Tracking

If the DGN has a Geocoordinate System assigned, when you activate the Tracking command it will track the Lat/Long.  If you need to annotate specific points you can tentative snap to the points and left click to display annotation for the tracking.

You can control the display of the annotation through the Tracking commands Settings to control what objects are annotated as well as the Text Symbology.

Please Note:  This will only work if you have a Geocoordinate System assigned to the DGN.  If the DGN does not have the GCS assigned, the Lat/Long will be blank and only annotate the Northing/Easting.

Question:

When using commands through the geometry options in InRoads, the list of points for certain objects is completely blank.  For example, when this user goes to the Geometry > Vertical Regression > Edit/Review Regression Point, the list comes up blank but is populated on other machines.

Answer:

This is occurring because the column widths are minimized.  Each field is minimized so the text for each available column is hidden.  To correct this, place your cursor over the far left of the top header and you will get a vertical bar with a left and right arrow for the cursor.  Click and drag the column to the right to expand the field.  You may have to do this numerous times to get all columns shown.
